Welcome!

Welcome to the website of the Rutgers Equine Science Center, the horse-loving public’s immediate, twenty-four/seven access to the tremendous resources of the Center and its programs. If you are a newcomer to the site, what you will find is a comprehensive, robust, and powerful educational tool for equine enthusiasts of all ages, breeds and disciplines, and horse-related interests.

The Equine Science Center, at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, is a hub of discovery, learning, and influence whose sole focus and concentration is the horse. The Equine Science Center is a soft-walled center, not one of bricks and mortar such as a sports complex or equestrian riding center with a single building or facility used for a sole purpose or activity. The Center’s team of faculty, students and staff works in many university venues inside and outside Rutgers as well as with local horse farms to ensure “Better Horse Care through Research and Education.”

This means that our science is devoted to finding solutions to problems afflicting equine athletes in order to maximize performance and prevent injury or illness. It also means that we assist in assembling the vast resources of this state university and the state of New Jersey to help the horse industry survive and thrive – using our scientific expertise as well as our role as catalyst in the development of policy that will ensure the horse industry’s sustainability.

Recognizing the growing trend toward multi-tasking, the Equine Science Center has created a series of podcasts for learners “on the run” or on their computers. Using the latest in learning techniques, the podcasts cover some of the most asked-for information presented in the popular print-version Fact Sheets produced by Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty and posted on the Equine Science Center website. Currently the podcasts are readily accessible from our homepage where visitors can listen on their PC or download them onto on iPod for future listening.

In July of 2008 our efforts in producing the document and DVD, "The New Jersey Equine Industry 2007: Economic Impact," was recognized by the Extension Directors from the northeast land-grant universities with the Award of Excellence. This award, given annually, recognizes Extension outreach programming that has achieved outstanding accomplishments, results, and impacts in addressing contemporary issues.

Our quarterly newsletters, other documents of interest, fact sheets, and news of upcoming Center events and other items of interest from partnering agencies such as the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Division of Animal Health are also available on the website.

The Center has been busy this fall listening to our constituents at our annual Stakeholder Meeting and Equine Science Update. We are ramping up for "Horses 2009," a weekend-long educational program for new and professional horse owners which will take place on March 28-29, 2009. Check out the website for a description of the upcoming program.

Anyone can contact us and “speak” to our faculty and staff through this site. If you have a horse-related question, you probably will find the answer in our “FAQs,” located under “Ask Us.” Or, submit your question directly through our Ask the Expert feature. If you would like to submit a comment or suggestion, contact us at esc@njaes.rutgers.edu.
