Re: NJDA Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory offers Strangles PCR Testing

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory is pleased to announce validation of the Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing for strangles. The PCR test is approximately three times more sensitive than culture and readily differentiates Streptococcus equi from Streptococcus zooepidemicus.

For testing, the desired sample types are:

  • Nasopharyngeal swab

  • Nasal washes*

  • Lymph node abscess swab/pus

  • Guttural pouch swab/lavages

*Nasal washes are more sensitive detecting small numbers of bacteria.

Turnaround time for Strangles PCR testing is approximately 2 business days. PLEASE NOTE: the NJDA diagnostic laboratory does not accept deliveries of samples on weekends.

Cost for testing: $45.00.

For further information, please contact Dr. Betty Miguel, Assistant Director, Division of Animal Health, Director Animal Health Laboratory at 609-292-1270 or via email at beatriz.miguel@ag.state.nj.us.
