RUTGERS EQUINE SCIENCE CENTER ANNUAL UPDATE SET FOR DEC. 13;

 

‘MINI SEMINAR’ ADDED FOR HORSE OWNERS

 

            NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (October 5, 2005) –The Rutgers Equine Science Center will sponsor two educational seminars on Tuesday, December 13, 2005: a first-ever Equine Management Update from 2 to 4 p.m. and its annual Equine Science Update from 6 to 9 p.m.  Both events will take place at the New Jersey Museum of Agriculture on the Cook College campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

 

The new feature this year, the Equine Management Update, is aimed at horse owners, farm owners and managers, equine veterinarians and others involved in the horse industry. Topics will include:

  • Nutrient waste practices and procedures

  • Discussion of the new “Agricultural Management Practices for Commercial Equine Operations”

  • The national animal identification program and its implications for horse owners

  • Emergency preparedness tips and resources

            The Equine Science Update, geared to professionals, plus students, science teachers, 4-H horse program participants and educators, will include presentations highlighting the Equine Science Center’s work in advancing equine health, horse management practices, and solutions to equine industry issues.  Topics to be covered include:

  • Vitamin E: an antidote to stress in equine athletes?

  • Environmental stewardship on working horse farms, including water quality controls, pasture maintenance, waste management and best management practices
  • Nutritional findings from Cook College’s Young Horse Teaching and Research Program
  • Popular nutraceuticals (such as black tea and orange peel) and their effect on horses

In addition to the Equine Management Update and the Equine Science Update, tours of campus facilities will include a visit to the current crop of weanlings in the Young Horse Teaching and Research program at 4:30 p.m. and a demonstration of the Center’s high-speed equine treadmill at 5 p.m.

 

            The seminars and tours require reservations, which can be made by calling 732-932-9419 or emailing esc@aesop.rutgers.edu.  The suggested donation for the day’s activities, including a supper at 6 p.m., is $25 for adults and $10 for students. Equine Science Center’s Annual Equine Science Update 2005

December 13, 2005

 

Directions: From Route 1 (north or south), take the College Farm Road exit in New Brunswick (about one mile south of the Route 1/Route 18 interchange). Proceed west on College Farm Road. The New Jersey Museum of Agriculture is the first large building on the right (103 College Farm Road), and the Red Barn Equine Research Facility is about 1/10th of a mile further west on the right (across from the Dairy Barn). Parking is available at the Ag Museum and in Lot 98B on College Farm Road. The Ryders Lane barn is east of Route 1. If you are traveling south on Route 1, take the College Farm Road exit and proceed straight at the stop sign, travel under Route 1 and turn right at the first road after the underpass. From Route 1 traveling north, turn left immediately after exiting on College Farm Road.
