CALLING ALL FARM OWNERS! SPECIAL SHORT COURSE

FOCUSES ON FARM MANAGEMENT AT ‘HORSES 2007’

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (February 12, 2007) – Owners and managers of horse farms and other livestock facilities are signing up for the Farm and Land Management Short Course that is offered as part of “Horses 2007,” a major educational conference being held at Rutgers on March 31 and April 1. The farm and land management classes will take place at the Geiger Center on Ryders Lane on the Cook Campus in New Brunswick.
 

The two-day short course offers intensive instruction in the latest management research, with classes in

• Forage growth
• Weed management
• Pasture renovation and rotation
• Manure storage and disposal options
• Water quality management
• Drainage and buffering systems
• Soil fertility, and more.

The event takes place on the “best management practices” research facility that Rutgers Equine Science Center, the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, Rutgers Cooperative Extension and various state and federal partners are creating on Ryders Lane off Route 1 in New Brunswick. Classes start at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, and at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 1.

Classroom sessions will be supplemented with hands-on demonstrations and discussions of forage species and weed identification, varieties of pasture grasses (including some newly adapted species), water management techniques and pasture walks.

Enrollees in the short course will be much better equipped to address environmental regulations that are being introduced in New Jersey and surrounding states. In addition, Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) continuing education credits will be awarded.

The Farm and Land Management Short Course is limited to 80 participants, so pre-registration is strongly suggested. Tuition is $150 for the two days and includes instruction, management manual, and breakfast and lunch both days.
