Horses 2007 Farm and Land Management Short Course Now on DVD

Horse owners and other farmers were invited to the Best Management Practices (BMP) Showcase at the Equine Science Center for the first time on March 31st and April 1st, 2007, where the Equine Science Center, Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (a division of the United States Department of Agriculture), and Rutgers Cooperative Extension hosted the Farm and Land Management Short Course. The venue at the BMP farm provided an opportunity for small animal farm operators and horse owners to see a variety of best management practices that have been designed to address similar conditions that may exist on their farms.

Speakers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania involved in Extension and the Natural Resources Conservation Service presented on a variety of topics including pasture, manure and stormwater management issues. Horse farm owners and managers were taught the principles of pasture growth and rotation and weed identification and management with a variety of other lecture and demonstration topics on at the March 31 session. The following day the program included lectures and demonstrations on manure disposal and storage options and water quality strategies.

Video documentation of the entire program (including on-farm demonstrations) was compiled into a 10-disc DVD set, which is available for $79.99 + $8.00 for insured shipping. To purchase the set, or for more information, please e-mail Roberta Salinger at salinger@aesop.rutgers.edu or call 732-932-9514.
